Getting Started in the Library

Get your CFCC Library Card. You can get your Student ID card in the Library, 2nd floor of the Allied Health building, near the Circulation Desk. Check with library staff for the ID Schedule. You will need to bring a copy of your current class schedule. You’ll use this card to check out books and use the Library computers.

Bookmark the Library’s website: http://cfcc.edu/lrc/
Here you will find links to the Library Catalog, to NC LIVE, information on our hours & policies, and other useful things. Click on the Research Guides link to find Library Guides for subjects such as Art, Film and Music; tips for evaluating resources; how to cite sources; and avoiding plagiarism.

Finding Books & AV
Use the Library’s Catalog to find books, DVDs and videos in our Libraries. Be sure to also check the New Hanover Public Library (http://www.nhclibrary.org) and UNCW (http://library.uncw.edu/). There’s a charge for Community Patrons to get a UNCW borrower’s card, but it costs nothing to get a public library card.

Finding Articles
Start with NC LIVE by linking from the Library’s homepage. NC LIVE includes complete articles from over 16,000 newspapers, journals, magazines, and encyclopedias. You can access NC LIVE from home but you will be prompted for your CampusCrusier Username and Password.

In NC LIVE, the EZ Search (the default search) searches your term(s) in 11 separate databases. Good general databases include Academic Search Premier, MasterFile Premier, CQ Researcher, and the newspaper databases.

Browse Resources in NC LIVE
This is a good way to look for North Carolina resources. Select America’s Newspapers: North Carolina. This database indexes and provides full-text of 11 NC newspapers, including the Wilmington Star-News and The News & Observer (Raleigh).

Another good starting point for articles is SIRS (under Research Tools on the Library’s website http://cfcc.edu/lrc/).

Ask for Assistance
The librarians and all of the Library staff are here to assist you and help you to succeed. If you have any difficulty locating books or articles or other types of sources, please ask! Use the links to e-mail us via the Ask A Librarian link (lrcref@cfcc.edu) or come to the Reference Desk in the Library.
