Learning Objects and Online Tutorials: Nursing

Assessing Blood Pressure: This interactive tutorial presents the proper technique and common errors associated with assessment of blood pressure. The information is targeted at new learners in the clinical and health sciences and can serves as a review for current practitioners. It includes audio of blood pressure sounds, interactive simulations, and self-assessment tools.
Auscultation Assistant: The Auscultation Assistant provides heart sounds, heart murmurs, and breath sounds in order to help medical students and others improve their physical diagnosis skills.

Care Plan Corner: A site designed to help nursing students write accurate patient care plans.

National Library of Medicine Interactive Tutorials: These 165 tutorials are interactive health education resources produced by the Patient Education Institute. Using animated graphics each tutorial explains a procedure or condition in easy-to-read language. You can also listen to the tutorial.

Painless: In this scenario-based simulation, the user takes the part of a nurse caring for a post-operative cancer patient administering, adjusting and monitoring his medication.

The Structures of Life: An online tutorial for learning about the world of "structural biology" -- a branch of molecular biology that focuses on the shape of nucleic acids and proteins. It includes information on the structures and roles of proteins, tools used to study protein shapes, how proteins are used in designing new medications (for AIDS and arthritis), and what structural biology reveals about all life processes. It also has information about careers in biomedical research.

Surgical Procedure Videos: These videos are prerecorded webcasts of surgical procedures prepared for the National Library of Medicine. They show actual operations performed at medical centers in the United States since January 2004. The videos last an hour. Please note that you cannot send in questions by email, though the webcast may say that you can, because you are not seeing these videos live.

The Visible Heart: This animation focuses on the gross anatomy of the human heart. The model of the heart is semitransparent, allowing users to see through the thick cardiac muscle into the four heart chambers.

You can browse the site by topic, level of explanation (beginner, intermediate, & advanced), level of organization (cellular, molecular, neurological, psychological, & social), module, or guided tour. The site already contains over 70 presentations on the brain (and it is still under development)!

Gray's Anatomy Online: The Bartleby.com edition of Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body features 1,247 vibrant engravings—many in color—from the classic 1918 publication, as well as a subject index with 13,000 entries ranging from the Antrum of Highmore to the Zonule of Zinn.

Components of dental microbial plaque - Students examine the contents of organized microbial plaque and test their knowledge in matching exercises.
