College Transfer Program
Planning Year
Purpose Statement : The purpose of the college transfer program is to offer the first two years of the basic studies requirements leading to a bachelor's degree and to prepare students for successful transfer to a four-year institution. The college participates in the NC Comprehensive Articulation Agreement and an Articulation Agreement with UNC-W to prepare students for successful transfer to a university in the UNC System.
#1 Objective / Intended Student Outcome
Students transferring to a UNC four-year institution after completing at least 24 semester hours of CAA courses will perform as well or better than UNC native rising sophomores.
Procedures/Assessment Methods
1. Statistics reported in the annual Transfer Student Performance Report released by UNC-GA will be the source of data.
Criteria for Success
1a. 82.9% of community college students transferring to a UNC institution after earning at least 24 semester hours of transfer credit will have an overall 2.0 GPA after two semesters at a UNC institution.
1b. 82.9% of community college students transferring to a UNC institution after earning at least 24 semester hours of transfer credit will have a GPA of 2.0 or better in both math and English courses after two semesters at a UNC institution.
Results
1a. 85% of community college transfer students had an overall GPA equivalent to or greater than a 2.0 Based on GPA, transfer students did as well academically as the rising native sophomores.
1b. 81% of the community college transfers had a math GPA equal or greater than 2.0 and 86% of the transfers had an English GPA of 2.0 or higher. Transfers performed as well in English courses as the native rising sophomores' but not as well in math courses.
Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)
1. Math 107 (college algebra) is being strengthened to better relate with calculus at UNC institutions. Upon review of student transcripts, the majority of students completing 24 hours of transfer credits are not taking the basic studies math requirements before transferring. Transfer student transcripts are now being reviewed annually and students will be advised to complete their math and English requirements before transferring. A recommendation is being made by the state wide UNC and NCCCS articulation committee that students must complete a minimum of 44 semester hours of earned transfer credits at the community college before transferring to help ensure student success.
#2 Objective / Intended Student Outcome
AA and AS graduates transferring to an UNC institution will perform as well or better than UNC native rising juniors.
Procedures/ Assessment Methods
2. Statistics reported in the annual Transfer Student Performance Report released by UNC-GA will be the source of data.
Criteria for Success
2a. 82.9% of community college AA and AS graduates transferring to a UNC institution will have an overall GPA of 2.0 or greater after two semesters at a UNC institution.
2b. 82.9% of community college AA and AS graduates transferring to a UNC institution will have a GPA of 2.0 or better in both mathematics and English courses as compared to the native rising juniors after two semesters at the university.
Results
2a. 89% of the AA and AS graduates had an overall GPA equal to or greater than the UNC native rising juniors.
2b. 90% of the AA and AS graduates had a math GPA equal or greater than the native UNC rising juniors. 89% of the AA and AS graduates had a GPA equal to or greater than the native rising juniors.
Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)
2. The AA and AS graduates preformed better than the rising native juniors in all areas, therefore, no action was necessary to improve performance. This student outcome will be assessed again next planning cycle.
#3 Objective / Intended Student Outcome
AA and AS graduates will be satisfied with their academic preparation for transfer.
Procedures/Assessment Methods
3. A Graduating Student Opinion Survey will be administered to AA and AS graduates at the time they complete their ‘Intent to Graduate Form' to collect their opinions about the college transfer program.
Criteria for Success
3a. Of those completing the survey, 95% of the community college AA and AS graduates will ‘Agree' or ‘Strongly Agree' with the statement “I felt academically prepared for transfer”.
3b. Of those completing the survey, 95% of the AA and AS graduates will ‘Agree' or ‘Strongly Agree' with the statement “I felt the technology introduced in my program was up-to-date and current”.
Results
3a. 99% of the AA and AS graduates competing the survey agree or strongly agreed that they were academically prepared for transfer.
3b. 86% of the AA and AS graduates indicated agreement or strong agreement with the statement that technology introduced in their program was up-to-date. This percentage was much less than expected.
Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)
3. Upgrade of hardware and software in English, math and accounting computer labs is underway and will be completed spring semester. Learning lab hours have been expanded to two evenings and Saturdays to increase student access to computers outside the classroom.
