Automotive Technology Program
Planning Year

Purpose Statement : The purpose of the Automotive Technology program is to prepare students for employment as Automotive Service Technicians. Classroom and lab experiences integrate technical and academic course work with emphasis on theory, servicing, and operation of brakes, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, steering/suspension, automatic transmission/transaxles, engine repair, climate control, and manual drive trains. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students will be prepared to take the ASE exam and be ready for full-time employment in dealerships and repair shops in the automotive service industry.

#1 Objective / Intended Student Outcome

Graduates of the Automotive Technology program will be technically proficient.

Procedures/Assessment Methods

1a. Automotive faculty will develop and use a score check sheet to record student's success in identifying and correcting within a given period of time all of the mechanical problems in three test cars that have been prepared for the students by a team of automotive faculty.
1b. Student pass rates on the National Automotive Test will be used to measure proficiency.

Criteria for Success

1a. 90% of the graduates will be able to identify and correct mechanical problems in the three test cars within a given period of time.
1b. 80% of the graduates will pass the National Automotive Test on first try.

Results

1a. Eighty percent of the students were able to identify the mechanical problems and correct within the specified time period. Most failures could not find the problem in the electrical system.
1b. Eighty-three percent pass rate on the National Automotive Test. Weakness was shown in test items regarding hydraulic theory.

Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)

1a. Expanded the Electrical Trouble Shooting component in the AUT 1b Automotive Electrical Systems course. Will re-assess this outcome again next year to see if students improve their skills in electrical systems.
1b. Modified means of teaching hydraulic theory in AUT 102 Basic Automotive systems. Will re-assess this outcome again next year to see if students improve in hydraulic theory.

#2 Objective / Intended Student Outcome

Graduates of the Automotive Technology program will be successfully employed.

Procedures/Assessment Methods

2a. The graduate follow-up survey conducted by the Career and Testing Office for program review will be used to indicate employment rates of automotive graduates.
2b. At the end of the student's last semester in the program, automotive faculty will develop a list of graduates who are employed and the names of employers.

Criteria for Success

2a. 80% of the graduates will report employment when contacted by the Career and Testing Office within one year after graduating.
2b. 50% of the automotive students will indicate to the faculty that they are employed at the time of program completion.

Results

2a. 80% of graduates reported employment when contacted by Career and Testing Office.
2b. 70% reported employment to the faculty during their last semester in the program.

Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)

2. Employment rates of graduates met expectations so no action was necessary to improve. However, faculty may consider increasing the success criteria to 90% employment for graduates contacted within one year after completing the program.

#3 Objective / Intended Student Outcome

Employers of the Automotive Technology program graduates will be pleased with the education their employees received at the community college.

Procedures/Assessment Methods

3a. An Employer Survey will be conducted every five years by the college as part of the program review process.
3b. Annually, advisory committee members, who are employers of the program's graduates, will be surveyed to gather their level of satisfaction with automotive graduates' skills and knowledge.

Criteria for Success

3a. 90% of the employers responding to the program review Employer Survey will indicate they would employ future graduates of this program and would recommend the program to others.
3b. 100% of the Advisory Committee members will indicate that they would employ future graduates of this program and would recommend the program to others.

Results

3a. 90% of employers reported willingness to employ future graduates and recommend the program to others, however, only 50% of the local dealerships that were surveyed responded positively to these items.
3b. 100% of the Advisory Committee members responded favorably to both items.

Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)

3a. Added a local dealership representative to the advisory committee and reviewing curriculum to determine if separate program is needed.
3b. Expectation was met with advisory members so no action was needed.
