Cathleena Fonville attended Cape Fear Community College from 1996-1999 and earned her A.A.S. in Electronic Engineering with Instrumentation emphasis. After graduating from Cape Fear she went on to receive her B.S.E.T in Electrical Engineering from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. She is currently employed by General Electric as a Supplier Quality Engineer. Fonville attributes her achievement “to God, first and foremost, and the education she received from Cape Fear which allowed her to succeed at Corning Incorporated and General Electric, which are two of the biggest industrial facilities in Wilmington, NC.” Fonville believes that “CFCC helps to create people who are valuable to the workforce with all of the different programs they have to offer people.”

In honor of its 50th Anniversary, Cape Fear Community College is proud to announce the launch of an all-new Alumni Association, and its first member: Juan Gonzalez, a 1985 graduate from Venezuela. Juan Gonzalez worked in the oil industry in Venezuela until 1982, when he entered a nationwide contest and won a scholarship from the Venezuelan government to come to the United States and study Instrumentation Technology, a program that was not offered in Venezuela at that time. When he arrived in the states in October 1982, Juan learned English at Sacred Heart College in Belmont, NC before moving to Wilmington early in 1983 to attend CFCC.
Juan graduated from CFCC in 1985 and returned to Venezuela, where he pursued a BS in Electrical Engineering. He has held many Instrumentation positions since his return to Venezuela and he currently holds the position of Reliability Engineer in Instrumentation in a major Oil Upgrader Complex in Eastern Venezuela.
“By getting this degree at CFCC many doors opened before me in Venezuela because at the time, there was a major need for people with a degree in Instrumentation Technology in the Venezuelan oil industry,” says Juan.
Juan says that what he appreciates most about his CFCC experience is the quality of the education and the kindness of the students and faculty. He found out about the Alumni Association because he often tours the CFCC website to recall memories from his time at CFCC. Juan advises future alums to “enjoy your time at this prestigious school and get ready to face life with an excellent tool: a degree from CFCC.
