What is Distance Learning?
Distance Learning (DL) is defined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS, 2000) as a formal educational process in which the majority of the instruction occurs when student and instructor are not in the same place. Instruction may be synchronous or asynchronous. Courses may be offered via the Internet, Telecourses, or another appropriate medium using audio, video or other computer technologies.
Is Distance Learning right for you?
- Are you comfortable using a computer?
- Do you have access to a reliable off-campus computer? (Minimum Requirements)
- Have you taken a computer course or another course with heavy computer use (i.e., CIS 110, CIS 111) or have you been successful in other Internet courses?
- Are you an INDEPENDENT learner (meaning you seek out information on your own and can motivate yourself)?
- Do you perform well in READING and WRITING?
- Can you meet deadlines and manage your time well?
- Is coming to campus on a regular basis difficult for you because of work schedule, family obligations, health, or distance? (Please note that Hybrid and Telecourses do require on-campus attendance - although limited).
If you answered YES to most of the above questions - then a Hybrid or Internet class might be for you!!
