Basic Law Enforcement Training
The Basic Law Enforcement Training curriculum Certification Examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standard Commission prepares individuals to take the Justice Officers Basic Training Certification Examination mandated by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission. Successful completion of the curriculum certificate program requires that the student satisfy the minimum requirements for certification by the Criminal Justice Commission and/or the Sheriff's Commission. The student satisfactory completing this program should possess at least the minimum degree of general attributes, knowledge, and skills to function as an inexperienced law enforcement officer.
Job opportunities are available with state, county, and municipal governments in North Carolina. In addition, knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in this course of study qualify one for job opportunities with private enterprises in such areas as industrial, retail, and private security.
Prior to acceptance into Cape Fear Community College's Basic Law Enforcement Program you must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 20 years of age, minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Have a valid North Carolina Driver's License at time of orientation
- Obtain a letter of sponsorship from a Criminal Justice Agency of the State of North Carolina
- May not have committed or been convicted of a felony as defined in the NC Administrative Code, Title 12, Sub-Chapter 9-B, as revised.
A letter of sponsorship waives the tuition fee and allows your name to be entered on the list for the prospective class roster. A letter of sponsorship does not guarantee a position with the sponsoring agency. A maximum of 24 students constitute a class. If a class is full, applications will be placed on a waiting list for that class.
It becomes the responsibility of the person on the waiting list to contact and inform the BLET department that they wish to be on the next perspective class roster. If you are on the class roster but fail to report for registration, a space in a future class will not be held unless you contact the BLET department and then your name goes onto the list without priority.
Employees of Law Enforcement Agencies have the first priority to class space.
The student is responsible for books and uniforms. (See UNIFORMS/BOOKS/FEES.)
The course is 602 hours. A description of course hours is provided. Upon completion of the course, a State exam is administered for certification which is good for one year from date of State exam.
Call the BLET School, 910-362-7781 and request an application.
